🎉 돌잡이, the most important tradition for the baby's first birthday! 🎂

Today, we're diving into a delightful Korean tradition called "돌잡이" (doljabi), which is an integral part of celebrating a baby's first birthday, known as "돌" (dol) in Korean culture.

What is 돌잡이?

Families gather at a baby's first birthday party to celebrate the child's first year of life. One of the most exciting parts of this celebration is 돌잡이. The 돌잡이 is when the baby is encouraged to pick up an item from the selection laid out before them. Various items such as pencils, money, and threads will be placed in front of the baby. These items symbolize different future paths or fortunes the child might have.

It's believed that the item the child chooses will foretell their future. For example, picking up a stethoscope might suggest a future career in medicine, while choosing money could symbolize wealth and prosperity. The chosen item is seen as an indicator of the child's interests, and talents.

What items symbolize

1. 돈(Money): Rich, Property owner

2. 연필,붓(Pencil,Brush): Academic success - Scholar, Professor

3. 마이크(Microphone): Entertainers, Singers, Announcers…

4. 명주실(Silk Thread): Longevity, Health

5. 판사봉(Judge’s gavel): Judicial officer - Judge, Prosecutor, Lawyer

6. 청진기(Stethoscope): Medical personnel - Doctor, Nurse

7. 활,축구공(Bow,Soccer ball): Athlete
