🫗 Unraveling Korean Idiom: "밑 빠진 독에 물 붓기” 🫗
안녕하세요 여러분! (Hello everyone!)
We hope this newsletter finds you well on your Korean language learning journey. Today, we're diving into a fascinating Korean idiom that holds wisdom applicable to various aspects of life: "밑 빠진 독에 물 붓기" (Pouring water into a jar without a bottom).

Literal Translation: Pouring water into a jar without a bottom.
Understanding the Metaphor: The Bottomless Jar
Imagine a jar with no bottom - no matter how much water you pour in, it simply leaks out through the cracks. This metaphor reflects situations where your efforts seem futile, no matter how hard you work. In financial terms, it captures the feeling of money continuously slipping away, despite your best efforts to accumulate it.
Application in Daily Life:
1. Work and Effort: Have you ever felt like you were working tirelessly, but the results just didn't seem to match the effort? This idiom perfectly encapsulates that sentiment.
2. Finances: It's a common experience for young adults to feel like their income disappears as quickly as it comes in. This idiom captures the struggle of trying to fill a jar that seems to have no bottom when managing finances.

나가는 돈이 너무 많아서 아무리 열심히 일해도 밑 빠진 독에 물 붓기 같아.
There's so much money going out that no matter how hard I work, it's like pouring water into a bottomless jar.
🥿 A traditional fairy tale with the idiom "밑 빠진 독에 물 붓기" story <콩쥐팥쥐> part 1 🥿
Once upon a time, in the ancient days, there lived a girl named 콩쥐. Unfortunately, 콩쥐's mother had passed away due to illness. One day, 콩쥐's father welcomed a new wife into their home. The new wife brought along her daughter, a girl named 팥쥐. While 콩쥐 harbored affection for her new stepmother and stepsister, the stepmother always favored 팥쥐 and held a dislike for 콩쥐. Whenever an opportunity arose, 팥쥐 would make life difficult for 콩쥐.
One day, the stepmother called 콩쥐 and 팥쥐. "콩쥐야, use the wooden hoe to cultivate the rocky field. As for you, 팥쥐, use the iron hoe to work on the sandy field." Despite working diligently, 콩쥐 couldn't finish her task, and to make matters worse, her hoe broke. On the other hand, 팥쥐 quickly completed her work. Distressed, 콩쥐 sat down and began to cry.
Just then, a cow descended from the sky riding on a cloud. "콩쥐, I will hoe the field for you. Don't worry; go to the stream, wash up, and come back." After washing up, 콩쥐 returned to find the cow had perfectly hoed the field. The cow even gave 콩쥐 delicious fruits before disappearing.
Sometime later, there was a feast in a neighboring village. As the stepmother and 팥쥐 went to the feast, they assigned 콩쥐 numerous tasks. "Fill the jar to the brim, thresh all the rice in the yard, and don't forget to spin a beautiful thread! After completing these tasks, join us at the feast."
콩쥐 worked quickly. First, he fetched water and filled the big jar, but water kept leaking from a hole at the bottom. "Oh dear, what do I do?" At that moment, a toad appeared. "콩쥐, I'll plug the hole for you. Go ahead and pour the water." The toad firmly wedged itself into the hole, and as 콩쥐 poured water, the jar filled up.
Then, from the room, came the sound of a spinning wheel. Curious, 콩쥐 entered to find a fairy weaving cloth. In no time, the fairy had spun a beautiful thread. "콩쥐, now dress up nicely and go to the feast." The fairy offered pretty clothes and flower shoes.
And so, 콩쥐 went to the feast, transformed and beautiful, thanks to the help of the cow, the toad, and the fairy.
