๐Ÿคš Exploring Korean Idioms: "์†์ด ๋†€๋‹ค" ๐Ÿคš

This week, we're delving into the fascinating world of Korean idioms, and our spotlight is on the intriguing expression "์†์ด ๋†€๋‹ค"

๐ŸŒŸ What does "์†์ด ๋†€๋‹ค" mean?

Directly translated, "์†์ด ๋†€๋‹ค" means "the hands play." However, its true essence lies in conveying a sense of leisure, idleness, or having too much free time on one's hands. Imagine the leisurely movement of your hands when you're not occupied with tasks or responsibilities โ€“ that's the essence of "์†์ด ๋†€๋‹ค."

๐Ÿ” Cultural Insight:

Please, note that although we used the word โ€œrestโ€ in the translation, this phrase doesnโ€™t refer to the positive side of it. It refers mostly to the state when youโ€™re not doing anything, and thus may be seen as being lazy.
I feel like this meaning shows one of the sides of Korean culture, where working hard (์—ด์‹ฌํžˆ) is considered one of the most important things.

๐Ÿ’ผ Usage in Everyday Conversations:

  • Example 1: "์˜ค๋Š˜ ํ•  ์ผ ๋งŽ์•„. ์† ๋†€๋ฆฌ์ง€ ๋ง๊ณ  ์–ผ๋ฅธ ์ผ ํ•ด!"
(We have a lot of work to do today. Don't let your hands play, and hurry up and work!)

  • Example 2: "6๊ฐœ์›”์งธ ์ผ์ด ์—†์–ด์š”. ์†์ด ๋†€๊ณ  ์žˆ์œผ๋‹ˆ ๋„ˆ๋ฌด ๊ฑฑ์ •์ด์—์š”."
(I haven't had a job for six months. I'm so worried because my hands are playing.)

  • Example 3: "์† ๋†€๋ฆฌ๊ธฐ ์‹ซ์–ด์„œ ์ผ์„ ์•Œ์•„๋ณด๋Š” ์ค‘์ด์—์š”."
(I don't want to let my hands play, so I'm looking for a job.)

Wishing you joyful discoveries in your Korean language journey!

๐ŸฅฟKorean version of Cinderella <์ฝฉ์ฅํŒฅ์ฅ> part 2 ๐Ÿฅฟ

์ฝฉ์ฅ got dressed and headed to the feast. As she tried to cross the stream, a loud voice came from behind. "Everyone, make way. The nobleman is approaching!" Startled, ์ฝฉ์ฅ hurriedly dropped one flower shoe into the stream. 'What should I do? I need to go quickly before the feast ends...'

In the end, ์ฝฉ์ฅ left in a hurry, wearing only one flower shoe. Just then, the nobleman who had been following saw the flower shoe floating away. "This seems to be an exquisite flower shoe. Whose could it be?"

A little later, the nobleman arrived at the feast, holding the flower shoe in one hand. Many people had gathered at the feast. The nobleman immediately sought the owner of the flower shoe. "If there is anyone who owns this flower shoe, please come forward!"

The village maidens, each insisting that the flower shoe belonged to them, eagerly stepped forward. However, no one's foot fit into the shoe. ํŒฅ์ฅ, insisting forcefully that the shoe was hers, struggled to wear it but clumsily fell backward.

Now, the only person left in the village was ์ฝฉ์ฅ. Summoning courage, she approached the nobleman. When ์ฝฉ์ฅ put on the flower shoe, it fit perfectly. Finally, ์ฝฉ์ฅ took out the remaining flower shoe from her pocket. "I have finally found the owner of the flower shoes."

The stepmother and ํŒฅ์ฅ were left clueless and regretful. The nobleman welcomed kind ์ฝฉ์ฅ as his wife. As for the wicked stepmother and ํŒฅ์ฅ, they faced the consequences. However, kind ์ฝฉ์ฅ forgave them. Remorseful, the stepmother and ํŒฅ์ฅ left, never to return. Since then, ์ฝฉ์ฅ and the nobleman lived happily ever after.
